Google confirms that the Pixel Fold will be owner-reparable, joining other Pixel phones in this feature. According to a Google spokesperson, customers can order replacement parts for their Pixel Fold, including batteries, displays, cameras, and access repair guides provided by iFixit. This website publishes repair guides and advice. Google and iFixit will also make iFixit Fix Kits available, including tools such as screwdriver bits and spudgers to replace components like batteries and screens. The Pixel Fold will also have an Extended Warranty (Preferred Care), offering coverage against accidental damages and mechanical breakdowns after the warranty period ends.
If customers want to avoid fixing their devices themselves, they still have the option to use mail-in repairs or independent repair stores like break-fix. Google’s DIY repair program lets customers purchase spare parts in the US, UK, Canada, and other countries where Pixels are available.
Compared to other smartphones, foldable has acquired a reputation for fragility, and the Pixel Fold is no exception, with reports of broken displays circulating just days after the phone’s release. Nonetheless, Google is the first company to offer DIY repairs for foldable. However, given the foldable’s high cost and complexity, whether customers will be willing to carry out DIY repairs is unclear. As one reviewer remarked, “If I spent $1,800 on a gadget, I would much rather a qualified technician was the one wielding the screwdriver and spudger.”
