OnePlus, known for its flagship smartphones, has joined the ranks of tech giants like Google and Samsung in adopting generative AI technology for its devices. The company has introduced a suite of AI-powered features to the OnePlus 11 and OnePlus 12 smartphones in China, hinting at a potential global rollout in the future.
Unveiling the Generative AI Features
The new AI features, discovered in a recent ColorOS update for the OnePlus 11 and OnePlus 12 in China, include:
AI Summarizer: This tool generates concise summaries of phone calls, providing details such as time spent on the call, discussed topics, and action items.
Article Summary: Similar to AI Summarizer, this feature creates bite-sized outlines of news articles, allowing users to quickly grasp the main points of a story.
AIGC Remover: This tool, akin to the Pixel 8’s Magic Eraser, allows users to seamlessly remove unwanted objects or people from photographs.
Breeno Touch: Breeno, OnePlus’ parent company Oppo’s digital assistant, gains the ability to recognize on-screen content and offer relevant services, potentially similar to Google Lens’ visual search function.
Additional Updates and Improvements
In addition to the generative AI features, the update also introduces several non-AI enhancements:
Fingerprint Reader Accessibility: Users can now access the fingerprint reader without unlocking the screen, enhancing convenience and security.
Device Motion & Orientation Permission: This new permission prevents apps from utilizing the device’s sensors for hand gestures and display position detection, protecting user privacy.
Global Availability and OnePlus’ Response
OnePlus has yet to officially announce whether these AI features will be made available globally on OxygenOS, the international version of its operating system. However, given the growing trend of generative AI adoption among major smartphone brands, it’s likely that OnePlus will eventually bring these features to its global audience.
When asked about the international rollout, OnePlus stated, “We are always exploring new and innovative ways to improve the user experience on our devices. We have no further details to share at this time.”
