In response to allegations of monopolistic practices, the European Union (EU) has been investigating Apple’s restrictions on access to the NFC chip, which makes it challenging for third-party payment systems to compete with Apple Pay. Recently, the European Commission has requested additional details from Apple about the workings of Apple Pay.
In addition to requesting information from Apple, the European Commission has also distributed an inquiry to retailers regarding mobile payment platforms, including Apple Pay, as well as those based on QR codes and Bluetooth. The European Commission has stated that it is exploring other mobile payment technologies.
Apple has responded by claiming that allowing other payment systems access to the NFC chip would pose security and privacy risks.
