TikTok has launched Passkeys support on iOS, allowing users to log in to the social app without using vulnerable passwords. The passwordless authentication standard was introduced in iOS 16.
Leveraging iPhone’s Biometrics for Login Security
Passkeys replace passwords with keypair-based cryptography and biometrics for account login. Users authenticate via Face ID or Touch ID instead of inputting a password.
The private key never leaves the user’s device, while the app or site stores the public key. This safeguards against phishing and leaks. iOS Passkeys sync across Apple devices through iCloud Keychain.
Alliance-Backed Standard Gains Momentum
Though pioneered on Apple platforms, Passkeys were developed by the FIDO Alliance and W3C as a cross-platform standard. Google has also rolled out support in Android and ChromeOS.
Adoption by leading apps like TikTok brings more comprehensive visibility to Passkeys as a secure password alternative. Their convenience and phishing resilience make Passkeys a logical evolution.
iOS Users Get First Access
TikTok initially launched Passkey sign-in for iOS in select regions, including Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Support will expand to more areas and other platforms over time.
On iPhones, users can enable Passkeys via the TikTok Account page. The app will then authenticate via the Passkey for future logins.
Enhancing Security for Young Users
Given TikTok’s popularity with younger demographics, Passkeys provide added protection against compromised credentials. Users avoid password reuse habits that raise the risk.
TikTok joins Apple, Google and others in accelerating the passwordless future. Passkeys gain credibility as the next-generation login standard as major apps adopt support.
