Samsung has confirmed that it is working to bring dust protection to its foldable phones. While the recently announced Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 offer water resistance, they still lack protection against dust ingress. But that could change with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 next year.
Dust Resistance Would Make Foldables More Durable
During a press conference today, TM Roh, President and Head of Samsung’s MX Business, revealed that the company is actively developing solutions to add dust resistance to foldable devices. He acknowledged that consumers want this feature to improve the durability of foldable.
While the complex hinge mechanisms of foldable make complete dust-proofing difficult, Samsung is optimistic about achieving good resistance. If the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 launch with dust protection, they would be the first Samsung foldable to offer this capability.
Competitors like Motorola have added dust resistance in foldable like the Razr 2022, albeit with a lower IP52 rating. Samsung will likely aim for IP67 or IP68 certification for the Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6.
Launch Timeframe Still Uncertain
Roh noted that adding dust resistance to the foldable requires more development time. Before bringing them to market, Samsung must carefully test and validate dust protection enhancements.
As a result, we may have to wait until late 2023 or even 2024 before the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6 debut with dust resistance. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 launched just two days ago, so their successors are still a year away, at least.
Samsung is responding to customer feedback by working on this feature. But engineering challenges mean dust protection will take time to arrive. The company will rush the technology after it meets rigorous quality standards.
